Shades of Emotion:
Culturally Grounded Approaches to Emotional Expression in Black Communities
This interactive training equips therapists with culturally responsive strategies to support emotional expression in Black clients. Drawing on historical context, identity-based narratives, and expressive tools beyond talk therapy, participants will learn how to deepen emotional awareness, Work through ambivalence around emotional expression, and integrate creative techniques into clinical work. Through case studies, experiential activities, and discussion, this training empowers clinicians to engage clients in meaningful emotional work that honors cultural context and personal strengths.

Rayvéne Whatley, MA, LPC is a licensed therapist, clinical supervisor, and EMDR-certified practitioner specializing in culturally responsive care. She is the founder of Simplicity Psychotherapy and Audacity of Color. She integrates ACT therapy to help Black professionals explore emotional expression, identity, and healing through creative, clinically grounded approaches. Rayvéne is also the creator of the Shades of Emotion book series, a collection of culturally grounded emotional literacy tools designed to help Black adults, teens, and professionals explore and express emotions through creative reflection and affirming language.
